Everyday Faith

God Is Not Only Interested in Your Sundays

One weekend in September will be glorious. But the Kingdom is mostly built on ordinary Tuesdays — in your work, your business, your calendar, and the way you treat people who can do nothing for you.

There is a quiet lie that attaches itself to big Christian events, and it goes something like this: the real spiritual part of your life happens at the gathering, and then you go back to normal.

Two days in Gage Park are going to be wonderful. But you have roughly 363 other days this year, and God is not waiting around for the next event to work in them.

Paul wrote to people with genuinely unglamorous jobs — many of them enslaved, doing physical labour for someone else's benefit — and told them that whatever they were doing, they were doing it for the Lord. If scrubbing someone else's floor counted, your Tuesday counts.

Your work is not a holding pattern

Most of us have absorbed a ranking system nobody actually taught us: missionary at the top, pastor next, then everybody else somewhere below, doing regular jobs and hoping to be useful on the side.

Scripture doesn't sort people that way. The same God who calls someone to plant churches calls someone to run an honest business, pay staff properly, and be the person a struggling coworker can talk to.

This matters practically. If your job is just a way to fund the important things, you'll spend forty hours a week slightly absent. If your job is where God actually placed you, those forty hours become the front line.

Excellence is a witness

There's a version of Christian business that leans on the label and lets the quality slide — the fish logo doing work the craftsmanship should be doing. Everybody has met it, and it does real damage.

The alternative is quieter and much more persuasive: be genuinely excellent at the thing, be scrupulously honest about money, treat people well when there's no advantage in it, and let someone eventually ask why.

Proverbs promises that skilled work gets you in front of people who matter. That's not a prosperity formula, it's an observation about how influence actually works. Do good work and doors open. Walk through them as a Christian.

An ordered life leaves room to say yes

Here's an unglamorous spiritual discipline: get your life organised. Not for its own sake — because chaos is expensive.

When your week is a mess, you have no margin. Someone needs help on Thursday and you genuinely can't. The invitation comes and you're already underwater. Most of the times we fail to love people well, it isn't a failure of compassion. It's a failure of capacity.

A person with an ordered calendar and honest finances has room to be interrupted. And being interruptible is most of what it takes to be useful to God.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters."

— Colossians 3:23

Built by people who believe Monday counts

A few projects from this network, made by Christians who took their ordinary work seriously enough to do it properly.

Come to Gage Park in September. Sing, eat, bring your neighbours, enjoy every minute of it. Then go back to your Monday and understand that you are not leaving the Kingdom behind when you do — you're carrying it into the place God actually assigned you.

Faithful in small things was never the consolation prize. According to Jesus, it's the entire audition.
