What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?

Jesus told a respected religious teacher that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again. What He meant, what it is not, and how it happens.

To be born again is to receive new spiritual life from God through faith in Jesus. It is not something you achieve or a religious label you choose. It is something God does in you: a fresh start so real that Jesus compared it to being born.

The phrase comes from a night-time conversation in John 3. A respected religious teacher named Nicodemus came to Jesus with questions, and Jesus told him, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” Nicodemus was confused. Many people still are. Here is what Jesus meant.

What Nicodemus asked

Nicodemus took Jesus literally: “How can someone be born when they are old? Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born!” Jesus answered that He was talking about a different kind of birth — being “born of water and the Spirit.” Physical birth gives physical life; the Spirit of God gives spiritual life.

A few lines later the same passage contains what is probably the best-known verse in the Bible: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

What being born again is

It is new life from God. The Bible says that anyone who is in Christ is a new creation: the old has gone, the new is here. Your past is forgiven, God's Spirit comes to live in you, and you begin to grow into a different person — not overnight, but truly.

It is a gift received by faith. You cannot make yourself born any more than a baby can. You receive it by turning to Jesus and trusting Him.

What it is not

It is not just turning over a new leaf, or trying harder to be good. It is not a particular church denomination, a political label or a personality type. It is not reserved for people with dramatic stories. Growing up in a Christian home and quietly coming to trust Jesus is just as much a new birth as a sudden change in a park.

How a person is born again

By turning from running your own life and putting your trust in Jesus — that His death on the cross paid for your sin, that He rose again, and that He is Lord. Many people express that in a simple prayer, at an altar call or alone. The words matter less than the trust behind them.

At Jesus Festival Hamilton 2026, early reports counted more than 70 people who gave their lives to Jesus over one weekend. One person at the baptism tank said, “I was lost — who would have thought Jesus led me here!” That is what new birth sounds like.

How you know

Not by a feeling, which comes and goes, but by trusting what God has promised. Over time there are signs: a new hunger to know God, a growing love for other people, sin that bothers you more than it used to, and a sense that you belong to Him. New believers often describe a deep peace they cannot fully explain.

What comes next

A newborn needs feeding, care and family. So does new faith. Read the Bible — the Gospel of John, where this conversation happened, is a great place to start. Find a church. And talk to a pastor about baptism, the public sign of new life.

New life

Born again? Here is what comes next

The first steps after you trust Jesus — and you do not have to take them alone.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!"

— 2 Corinthians 5:17

Questions people ask

What does born again mean?

To be born again is to receive new spiritual life from God through faith in Jesus. Jesus used the phrase in John 3, telling Nicodemus that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.

Where does the Bible talk about being born again?

In John 3:1–21, in Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus. The theme also appears in 1 Peter 1:23 and 2 Corinthians 5:17, which says anyone in Christ is a new creation.

How do you become born again?

By turning from running your own life and trusting Jesus — that He died for your sin, rose again and is Lord. It is a gift from God received by faith, not something earned.

Is a born-again Christian a denomination?

No. Born again describes a spiritual reality Jesus said every believer needs, not a denomination or label.

Jesus did not tell Nicodemus to try harder. He told him he needed a new beginning that only God could give. That offer is still open — to anyone, at any age, anywhere.
