What Is Grace? God's Gift You Cannot Earn
Grace is the most important word in the Christian faith and the hardest to believe. What it means, why it is so different from religion, and what it changes.
Grace is God's love and kindness given to people who have not earned it and could never repay it. In the Christian faith, grace is how we are saved: not by being good enough, but by receiving what Jesus has done for us as a free gift.
It sounds simple. It is also the hardest thing in the world to believe, because almost everything else in life runs on earning. Here is what grace means, and why it changes everything.
Grace means gift
A wage is something you earn. A gift is something you receive. The Bible is clear about which one salvation is: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.”
You cannot buy it, deserve it or work your way up to it. You can only accept it.
Why grace is different from religion
Most religion, and most of life, works like a ladder: do enough good things and you climb closer to God. Grace turns that upside down. God came down the ladder to us in Jesus, while we were still far from Him. The Bible says God demonstrated His love in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
That is why grace offends proud people and frees desperate ones. It levels everyone. Nobody is too good to need it, and nobody is too far gone to receive it.
Grace and mercy
A simple way to tell them apart: mercy is not getting the punishment we deserve; grace is getting the kindness we do not deserve. In Jesus, God gives both — forgiveness for our sin, and adoption into His family with every blessing that comes with it.
Grace is not permission
If everything is forgiven, why not do whatever we want? Paul anticipated that question and answered it bluntly: by no means. Grace does not just forgive; it changes us. The Bible says the grace of God teaches us to say no to ungodliness and to live upright lives.
People who truly grasp how much they have been given do not look for ways to take advantage of the Giver. They want to live for Him.
What grace changes
Grace means you can stop performing for God. You can be honest about your failures, because your standing with Him does not rest on your record but on Jesus'. It means you can extend grace to others: forgive, be patient, give generously.
At Jesus Festival Hamilton 2026, more than 50 people were baptized in the park. Not one of them earned their place in the water. That is what grace looks like.

Questions people ask
What is grace in Christianity?
Grace is God's undeserved love and kindness. Christians believe people are saved by grace through faith in Jesus — as a free gift, not by earning it through good works (Ephesians 2:8–9).
What is the difference between grace and mercy?
Mercy is not receiving the punishment we deserve; grace is receiving kindness and blessing we do not deserve. God offers both through Jesus.
Does grace mean I can keep sinning?
No. The Bible says grace both forgives and transforms, teaching believers to say no to sin and live for God (Romans 6:1–2, Titus 2:11–12).
How do I receive God's grace?
By trusting Jesus — turning to Him and accepting His death and resurrection as the gift that makes you right with God.
