What Is Advent? A Simple Guide for 2026
Advent 2026 begins on Sunday, November 29. What the season means, why Christians wait before Christmas, and simple ways to keep it at home in Hamilton or anywhere.
Advent is the season of waiting and preparing that leads up to Christmas. It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day. In 2026, Christmas falls on a Friday, so Advent begins on Sunday, November 29, and runs through Christmas Eve.
The word comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “arrival” or “coming.” For Christians, Advent looks in two directions at once: back to the first coming of Jesus, born in Bethlehem, and forward to the day He has promised to return.

Why wait before Christmas?
Most of the world jumps straight into Christmas by November. Advent slows down on purpose. It remembers that God's people waited centuries for the promised Messiah, praying and hoping in the dark. And it reminds us that the world still waits for Jesus to make everything right.
Waiting is not wasted time in the Bible. It is where hope grows. Advent gives you four weeks to make room for Jesus before the celebration begins.
The four Sundays
In 2026 the Sundays of Advent fall on November 29, December 6, December 13 and December 20. Many churches give each week a theme — often hope, peace, joy and love — though traditions vary from church to church.
Each Sunday is a chance to read part of the Christmas story, sing an Advent hymn like “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” and pray about that week's theme.
The Advent wreath
The best-known Advent tradition is the wreath: a ring of evergreen with four candles, one lit on each Sunday, and often a fifth candle in the centre lit on Christmas. The growing light is a picture of Jesus, the light of the world, coming into the darkness.
You do not need anything fancy. Four candles on a plate on the kitchen table work perfectly.
Simple ways to keep Advent at home
Read a little of the Christmas story each day. Luke 1–2 and Matthew 1–2 can be read slowly over four weeks, or read through the prophecies of Isaiah that pointed to Jesus. Light a candle at dinner on Sundays and pray together.
Give something away each week — to a neighbour, a food bank, someone who will spend Christmas alone. Invite someone to a Christmas service. Advent is not only about getting ready; it is about making room for others the way God made room for us.
Advent for people who are struggling
Christmas can be hard: grief, loneliness, money worries and family tension do not take December off. Advent makes space for that honesty. It is a season that admits the world is not yet as it should be, and holds on to the promise that Jesus came for exactly that kind of world.
