What Is an Altar Call? What Happens When You Go Forward
At Jesus Festival there was an altar call on Friday night and again on Saturday. If you have never seen one, here is what it is, why churches do it, and what happens when you respond.
An altar call is an invitation, usually at the end of a message, for anyone who wants to respond to Jesus to say so publicly — by standing, raising a hand, or walking to the front to be prayed with. It is not a ritual you have to perform to be saved. It is a moment to say out loud what is happening in your heart.
At Jesus Festival Hamilton 2026 there was an altar call on Friday night and again on Saturday. Early reports counted more than 70 people giving their lives to Jesus over the weekend. If you watched people walk toward the bandshell and wondered what was going on, this is for you.
Where the name comes from
In many church buildings the front is called the altar, so an invitation to come forward became known as an altar call. In a park there is no altar at all — just grass in front of a stage. The name stuck anyway, because the heart of it was never the furniture.
Public invitations to respond to the Gospel became widely known through open-air and stadium preaching, and through evangelists such as Billy Graham, who invited people forward at the close of his meetings for decades.
Why churches do it
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus calls people to respond: “Come, follow me.” Faith is personal, but it was never meant to stay secret. Paul writes that if you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
An altar call simply makes room for that declaration. It gives someone who has been moved during worship or a message a clear, unhurried way to act on it — and it means they will not walk away alone.
What happens when you go forward
Usually the speaker explains the invitation, then asks people who want to respond to come to the front. You are not put on the spot or asked to speak to the crowd. When you get there, someone from the prayer team will meet you, ask your name, and pray with you. Often they will lead you in a simple prayer you can repeat in your own words.
That is it. There is no test, no fee, no form you must sign, and no pressure to join anything. If you would like help with next steps, the person praying with you can point you to a church or to people who will walk with you.
Some people go forward for other reasons: to recommit their life to Jesus after drifting, to ask for healing, or simply to ask for prayer. All of those are welcome.
If you want to respond but missed the moment
An altar call is a doorway, not the only door. You can respond to Jesus right now, wherever you are. There are no magic words, but many people pray something like this:
“Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God, that You died for my sins and rose again. I am sorry for the wrong I have done. I turn to You and give You my life. Be my Lord and Saviour. Fill me with Your Spirit and help me follow You. Amen.”
If you prayed that and meant it, tell someone today. Then take the next steps below.
What comes next
Saying yes is the beginning. Start reading the Bible — the Gospel of John is a good first book. Find a local church where you can be known. And if you have not been baptized, talk to a pastor about taking that step; at Jesus Festival 2026 more than 50 people were baptized in the park.
