Who Is Jesus? A Plain-Language Answer
Every Jesus Festival is named for Him. Who He was in history, what He claimed about Himself, why it matters that He rose, and what He offers you.
Jesus of Nazareth was a Jewish teacher who lived in the first century in what is now Israel and the Palestinian territories. He gathered followers, taught about the kingdom of God, was crucified by the Roman authorities under Pontius Pilate, and — His followers insisted from the very beginning — rose from the dead three days later.
Christians believe He is far more than a teacher: the Son of God, God come in human flesh, the Saviour of the world. Jesus Festival is named for Him, and everything that happens in Gage Park points to Him. So it is worth asking plainly: who is He?
Jesus in history
Almost all historians, religious or not, agree that Jesus was a real person. Beyond the four Gospels in the New Testament, the Roman historian Tacitus records that He was executed under Pontius Pilate, and the Jewish historian Josephus also mentions Him.
He grew up in Nazareth, a small town in Galilee. Around age thirty He began teaching, healing and gathering disciples. His public ministry lasted about three years and ended with His crucifixion in Jerusalem.
What He taught
Jesus taught that the kingdom of God had come near — that God was acting to set the world right. He called people to turn from sin and trust God. He taught that the greatest commandments are to love God with everything you have and to love your neighbour as yourself.
He told stories people still repeat: the prodigal son, the good Samaritan, the lost sheep. He welcomed people others pushed away — the sick, the poor, the despised, children — and confronted religious pride.
What He claimed about Himself
Jesus did not present Himself as one teacher among many. He forgave sins, which His listeners understood only God could do. He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,” and, “I and the Father are one.”
Claims like that leave few options. As many have pointed out, a man who said such things would be either badly mistaken, deliberately deceptive, or exactly who He said He was. Christians believe the last.
Why the resurrection matters
Jesus' followers did not claim He lived on in their memories. They claimed His tomb was empty and that they saw Him alive again — and many of them faced persecution and death rather than deny it. The church spread from that claim.
If Jesus rose, then His claims about Himself are true, His death on the cross was not a tragedy but a rescue, and death itself has been defeated. That is why Christians call it good news.
What He offers you
Jesus offers forgiveness, a restored relationship with God, His Spirit to live in you, and eternal life. He offers it as a gift, not a reward. His invitation is still the same as it was on the shores of Galilee: “Come, follow me.”
At Jesus Festival Hamilton 2026, early reports counted more than 70 people who answered that invitation over one weekend. You can answer it too, wherever you are.

Read about Jesus in His own words
The best way to answer “Who is Jesus?” is to read the eyewitness accounts. Start with John — one chapter a day.
"Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”"
— John 14:6
