What Is the Gospel? The Good News in Plain Words
Every Jesus Festival exists to share one message. Here it is without church jargon: what the Gospel is, why it is called good news, and what it asks of you.
The Gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day — so that anyone who turns to Him and trusts Him is forgiven, made right with God, and given new life that lasts forever.
That is the message every Jesus Festival exists to share. Worship, free food, bouncy castles and baptisms in a city park are all ways of saying the same thing. Here it is slowly, in plain words, for anyone who has heard the word “Gospel” and never quite known what it meant.
Why it is called good news
The word Gospel comes from an old English word meaning “good news.” It is not advice about how to be a better person, and it is not a list of rules. It is an announcement about something God has already done.
Advice says: here is what you must do. News says: here is what has happened. The Gospel is news.
God made us, and loves us
The story starts with God, not with us. God created the world and every person in it, and He made us to know Him. You are not an accident, and you are not invisible to Him. He loves you.
Something is broken
Most people do not need to be told that something is wrong with the world, or with themselves. The Bible calls it sin: turning away from God to run our own lives our own way. It shows up in what we do, what we fail to do, and what we love most.
Sin is not just bad behaviour. It separates us from God, who is perfectly good, and we cannot fix that separation by trying harder. The Bible says plainly that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Jesus came, died and rose again
This is the heart of the good news. God did not leave us there. He came Himself, as Jesus — fully God and fully human. Jesus lived the life we could not live, without sin. Then He died on a cross, taking on Himself the penalty for our sin.
Three days later He rose from the dead. The resurrection is not a metaphor; it is the claim the whole Christian faith stands on. Because Jesus is alive, death does not get the last word, and forgiveness is real.
It is a gift, received by faith
You cannot earn this. It is grace — a gift you do not deserve and cannot buy. The Bible says it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and that it is the gift of God, not the result of works.
Receiving it means two things that belong together: repentance — turning from running your own life — and faith — trusting Jesus, not yourself, to make you right with God. It is less like passing a test and more like coming home.
What it changes
The Gospel gives forgiveness for the past, the presence of God's Spirit now, and a sure hope for the future. It also gives you a family: the Church, people who have received the same grace and walk with Jesus together.
At Jesus Festival Hamilton 2026, early reports counted more than 70 people who heard this message and gave their lives to Jesus, and more than 50 who were baptized in the park. Each one was a person hearing this same good news and saying yes.
How to respond
If you believe this is true, you can respond to Jesus right now. Tell Him in your own words that you are turning to Him, that you trust what He did on the cross, and that you want Him to lead your life. Then tell someone, start reading the Gospel of John, and find a church where you can grow.

Take the next step
If the good news has landed for you, these are the first steps — and you do not have to take them alone.
"For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures."
— 1 Corinthians 15:3–4
