What Is Worship? Why Christians Sing, and What Happens at the Bandshell

Worship is the heart of every Jesus Festival. If you have stood at the edge of the crowd wondering why people sing, raise their hands or close their eyes, this is for you.

Worship is giving God the honour, love and attention He deserves. For Christians it is far bigger than singing — the Bible calls a whole life offered to God “true and proper worship.” But singing together is one of the oldest and clearest ways the Church has always done it.

It is also the heart of every Jesus Festival. In 2026, Friday was Pure Worship Night at the George R. Robinson Bandshell, led by Bethel Gospel Tabernacle, and Saturday brought worship from Terry Posthumus, ACTS Kingdom Sound Worship, Friday Night Prayer and more. If you have ever stood at the edge of that crowd wondering what was going on, this is for you.

Why Christians sing

Because God is worth it. Worship songs are mostly not about how we feel; they are about who God is and what He has done — His goodness, His faithfulness, Jesus' death and resurrection. Singing it out loud, together, is how a crowd says, “This is true, and it matters more than anything.”

The Bible is full of singing. The book of Psalms is a songbook. Paul tells churches to speak to one another with psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit. Singing has been part of Christian worship from the beginning.

Why people raise their hands, kneel or close their eyes

The Bible describes worship with the whole body: lifting hands, bowing, kneeling, clapping, even dancing. Raised hands can mean surrender, praise or simply “I need You.” Closing your eyes can help you focus on God instead of the people around you.

None of it is required, and no one is watching to see if you do it right. Some of the most sincere worshippers in any crowd are standing perfectly still.

Worship is not a performance

At a concert, the audience watches the stage. In worship, the people on stage are helping the crowd look somewhere else — to God. A good worship leader is trying to get out of the way. That is why a worship night can feel different from a concert even when the music is just as loud.

What it looks like at the bandshell

At Jesus Festival, worship sets run through the day. Between songs there are often short prayers, testimonies and moments of quiet. You will see people singing at the front, families on blankets further back, and others simply listening from the edge of the lawn. All of that is welcome.

Sometimes worship turns into prayer or an altar call, where people are invited to respond to Jesus. In 2026 there were altar calls on both Friday night and Saturday.

If you have never worshipped before

You do not need to know the songs or believe everything yet. Read the words on the screen. Sing the lines you mean, and listen to the ones you are not sure about. Ask God, quietly, to show you if He is real. Many people have met Jesus in exactly that moment.

Worship on a Tuesday

Worship does not end when the music stops. Doing your work honestly, being kind when you are tired, giving generously, forgiving someone — the Bible treats all of it as worship. A festival worship night is a high point; an offered life is the point.

Meet the worship leaders

Bethel Gospel Tabernacle led Friday's Pure Worship Night at the bandshell.

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship."

— Romans 12:1

Questions people ask

What is Christian worship?

Christian worship is giving God the honour, love and attention He deserves. It includes singing, prayer and gathering as a church, and in the Bible it extends to a whole life offered to God (Romans 12:1).

Why do Christians raise their hands in worship?

The Bible describes lifting hands as an expression of praise, surrender and prayer (for example Psalm 63:4). It is a personal response, never a requirement.

Do I have to sing at a worship night?

No. You are welcome to listen, read the words, or sing only the lines you mean. Worship is a response to God, not a performance.

Who led worship at Jesus Festival 2026?

Bethel Gospel Tabernacle led Friday's Pure Worship Night on September 4, 2026. Saturday's worship included Terry Posthumus, ACTS Kingdom Sound Worship and Friday Night Prayer.

Worship is not about getting the songs right. It is about turning your face toward God. You can start right where you are standing.
