What Is Faith? Trusting God When You Cannot See

Faith is not believing without reasons or forcing yourself to feel certain. It is trust in a person. What the Bible means by faith, how it grows, and what to do with doubt.

Daniel Ziedins October 26, 2026 4 min read

In the Bible, faith is trust — confident reliance on God and His promises, especially on Jesus. It is not believing something without any reason, and it is not a feeling you have to manufacture. It is putting your weight on Someone who has shown Himself trustworthy.

The book of Hebrews puts it this way: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Here is what that means in everyday life, how faith grows, and what to do when doubt comes.

Faith is trust in a person

When you sit on a chair, you show faith in it. The strength is in the chair, not in how confident you feel about it. Christian faith works the same way: what saves is not the strength of your faith but the One you trust.

That is good news for anyone whose faith feels small. Jesus said faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. A little faith in a great God goes a long way.

Faith has reasons

Biblical faith is not a leap in the dark. It rests on what God has done in history, above all the death and resurrection of Jesus, witnessed by people who staked their lives on it. Luke wrote his Gospel after carefully investigating everything “so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.”

Faith shows up in life

James writes that faith without deeds is dead. Real trust changes what you do: you pray instead of only worrying, you obey when it costs something, you give, you forgive, you take a step before you see the whole staircase. Hebrews 11 lists people who did exactly that — Noah built, Abraham went, Moses left Egypt — all trusting what God had promised.

How faith grows

Paul writes that faith comes from hearing the message about Christ. Faith grows as you get to know God: reading the Bible, praying, worshipping, and walking with other believers who have trusted Him longer than you.

It also grows through testing. Every time you trust God in something hard and find Him faithful, your trust deepens.

What to do with doubt

Doubt is not the opposite of faith; unbelief that refuses to look is. A father once came to Jesus with a desperate request and said, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” Jesus did not send him away. He helped him.

Bring your questions to God honestly. Bring them to a pastor or a Christian friend. Read the Gospels and look at Jesus again. Many people find their faith comes out of seasons of doubt stronger and more honest than before.

Take a step

Put your faith in Jesus

Faith starts with trusting Him. Here is the good news to trust.

"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."

— Hebrews 11:1

Questions people ask

What is faith according to the Bible?

Faith is trust in God and His promises, especially in Jesus. Hebrews 11:1 describes it as confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Is faith believing without evidence?

Not in the biblical sense. Christian faith rests on what God has done in history, especially Jesus' death and resurrection, attested by eyewitnesses.

How can I grow my faith?

Get to know God through the Bible, prayer, worship and a church community, and trust Him in practical steps. Romans 10:17 says faith comes from hearing the message about Christ.

Is it wrong to doubt?

No. Honest doubt can be brought to God. In Mark 9:24 a father told Jesus, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief,” and Jesus helped him.

Faith is not having all the answers. It is trusting the One who does — one step at a time.
