What Is Christmas Really About?

Under the lights and the shopping is a claim so big it split history in two: God became a baby. What Christmas means, where December 25 comes from, and why it matters.

Daniel Ziedins November 4, 2026 4 min read

Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus — and with it, the most astonishing claim in the Christian faith: that the God who made everything became a human being. Christians call this the incarnation, from a Latin word meaning “in the flesh.”

Under the lights, the shopping and the songs on repeat, that is still what Christmas is about. Here is what it means, where the date comes from, and why it matters in an ordinary life.

God with us

Matthew records an angel telling Joseph that Mary's son would fulfil Isaiah's words: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” — which means “God with us.” John puts it even more plainly: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”

Christmas is not about God sending advice from a distance. It is God coming close enough to be held, to get tired, to cry, to eat with sinners and, in the end, to die for them.

Born small on purpose

Jesus was not born in a palace. Luke tells us He was laid in a manger because there was no guest room available, and that the first people told were shepherds working the night shift. God's arrival came first to ordinary, overlooked people. It still does.

Why He came

The angel told Joseph to name the child Jesus “because he will save his people from their sins.” The baby in the manger grew up to go to the cross. Christmas and Easter belong to the same story: He was born so that He could live the life we could not and give His life for us.

That is why the angels called it “good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” Not some people — all.

Why December 25?

The Bible does not say what day Jesus was born. Christians in Rome were celebrating His birth on December 25 by the fourth century, and the date spread from there. Historians still debate exactly why that date was chosen. Some churches, such as many Orthodox churches that follow the older Julian calendar, celebrate on January 7.

The date was never the point. The event was.

What Christmas can mean for you

If God came this close, no one is too far away. Christmas is an invitation to respond to the One who came — to receive Him the way the shepherds did, with wonder, and to share Him the way they did, by telling everyone what they had seen.

Practically: go to a Christmas service. Read the story in Luke 2. Give generously to someone who cannot give back. Invite someone who would otherwise be alone. That is what God did for us.

25 days to Christmas

One short reading a day from December 1 to Christmas morning.

"Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord."

— Luke 2:11

Questions people ask

What is the true meaning of Christmas?

Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus and the Christian belief that God became human in Him — Immanuel, “God with us” — in order to save people from their sins.

Why is Christmas on December 25?

The Bible does not give Jesus' birth date. Christians in Rome were celebrating it on December 25 by the fourth century, and historians debate why that date was chosen. Many Orthodox churches celebrate on January 7.

What does incarnation mean?

Incarnation, from a Latin word meaning “in the flesh,” is the Christian belief that God the Son became fully human in Jesus while remaining fully God.

Where is the Christmas story in the Bible?

The birth of Jesus is told in Matthew 1:18–2:23 and Luke 1:5–2:40, and John 1:1–14 explains its meaning.

Christmas is God's answer to the question of whether He is near. He came. He is still Immanuel — God with us.
