What Does It Mean to Be a Christian?
Not a culture, a family background or a list of rules. What it actually means to be a Christian, how a person becomes one, and what changes after.
A Christian is someone who trusts Jesus Christ as Saviour and follows Him as Lord. That is the heart of it. Being a Christian is not mainly about where you grew up, what your family believes or how good you are. It is about who you belong to.
The name first appears in the book of Acts: “The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.” People noticed that these men and women were all about Christ. Here is what that means today.
Not a label, a relationship
You can go to church, celebrate Christmas and hold Christian values without being a Christian in the Bible's sense. Jesus said eternal life is to know the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom He sent. Being a Christian is knowing Him — a living relationship, not an inherited identity.
How a person becomes a Christian
Not by being good enough. The Bible says we are saved by grace through faith, as a gift. A person becomes a Christian by turning from running their own life — repentance — and trusting Jesus — faith — that He died for their sins, rose again, and is Lord.
For some that happens in a single moment, like an altar call in a park. For others it happens slowly over years. Either way, the Bible describes it as being born again: a new life that God gives.
What changes
Your standing with God changes completely: forgiven, accepted, adopted as His child. His Spirit comes to live in you. And slowly, your life begins to change — what you love, how you treat people, what you do with your time and money.
Christians are not perfect. They still struggle and fail. But they are being changed, and they keep coming back to Jesus.
What a Christian life looks like
The first Christians “devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” That is still the shape of it: reading the Bible, belonging to a church, sharing communion, praying, being baptized as a public sign of faith, serving others, and telling people about Jesus.
Jesus summed it up in two commands: love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and love your neighbour as yourself.
If you want to become a Christian
You can respond to Jesus today, wherever you are. Tell Him, in your own words, that you are turning to Him and trusting Him. Then tell someone, start reading the Gospel of John, and find a church. At Jesus Festival Hamilton 2026, early reports counted more than 70 people who took that step in one weekend. You are welcome to take it too.
Take the step
What to do after you say yes
The first steps of following Jesus, and you do not have to take them alone.
"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."
— John 17:3
